Causes of Heart Palpitations

En bref

That fluttering, pounding, or skipped-beat feeling is usually harmless and tied to everyday triggers — but a few accompanying signs mean it's worth getting checked.

Palpitations — the sensation of a racing, pounding, fluttering, or skipped heartbeat — are extremely common and, in most cases, not a sign of underlying heart disease.

Everyday Triggers

The large majority of palpitations are linked to identifiable, non-dangerous triggers: caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, stress or anxiety, intense exercise, dehydration, fever, and hormonal shifts (including pregnancy and menstrual cycle changes) are all common causes.

When They Signal a Rhythm Problem

Less commonly, palpitations reflect an actual heart rhythm disturbance (arrhythmia), such as atrial fibrillation, particularly when they occur frequently, last a long time, or happen alongside other symptoms.

Symptoms That Warrant Medical Evaluation

Get evaluated promptly if palpitations come with chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or fainting, or if they occur frequently, last more than a few minutes, or happen during rest rather than only during exertion or caffeine/stress spikes.

Avertissement

This guide is for general education only and does not diagnose any individual case. If palpitations are new, frequent, or accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, seek medical evaluation — call emergency services if these are severe or sudden.

Questions fréquentes

Are heart palpitations dangerous?

Usually not — most palpitations are linked to everyday triggers like caffeine, stress, or exercise. They warrant evaluation when frequent, prolonged, or accompanied by chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
