En bref
Cholesterol isn't inherently bad — the body needs it — but the wrong balance quietly raises the risk of heart disease over years. Here's what actually matters.
Dans cet article
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance the body needs to build cells and produce certain hormones. The liver makes all the cholesterol the body actually needs — the rest comes from diet, and having too much of the wrong type circulating in the blood is what raises health risk.
LDL and HDL: Not All Cholesterol Is the Same
Cholesterol travels through the blood attached to proteins, forming lipoproteins:
- LDL (low-density lipoprotein) — often called "bad" cholesterol, since too much contributes to plaque buildup in artery walls. Our LDL cholesterol guide covers this specifically.
- HDL (high-density lipoprotein) — often called "good" cholesterol, since it helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. Our HDL cholesterol guide covers this specifically.
Why It's Called Silent
Like high blood pressure, high cholesterol typically causes no symptoms at all — it's discovered through a blood test, not by how you feel. Left unaddressed over years, it contributes to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries), raising the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Testing and Management
A lipid panel — measuring LDL, HDL, and triglycerides together — is the standard way cholesterol is checked. Our normal cholesterol levels guide covers how to interpret results, and our how to lower cholesterol guide covers what actually helps.
Avertissement
This guide is for general education only and does not diagnose or recommend treatment for any individual. Cholesterol is checked with a blood test, not symptoms — talk to a doctor about when you should be screened.
Dans ce guide
HDL Cholesterol: Normal Range
HDL cholesterol is the protective type that helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood — here's what counts as a healthy level.
How to Lower Cholesterol
Diet and lifestyle changes can meaningfully improve cholesterol levels — here's what has the strongest evidence behind it.
LDL Cholesterol: Normal Range
LDL cholesterol is the type most directly linked to artery plaque buildup — here's what counts as a healthy level and why targets vary by individual risk.
Normal Cholesterol Levels
A lipid panel measures several different numbers — here's what's generally considered a healthy range for each.
Symptoms of High Cholesterol
High cholesterol is almost always symptomless — which is exactly why testing, not how you feel, is how it's found. Here's what rare visible signs can look like.
Triglycerides: Normal Range and Causes of High Levels
Triglycerides are a different type of blood fat from cholesterol, but they're checked together — here's what a normal level looks like and what raises it.
Questions fréquentes
Is all cholesterol bad?
No — the body needs cholesterol to function, and HDL cholesterol is actually protective. It's specifically too much LDL cholesterol that raises health risk.
Does high cholesterol cause symptoms?
Usually not — like high blood pressure, high cholesterol typically causes no symptoms and is found through a blood test.
