Symptoms of High Cholesterol

En bref

High cholesterol is almost always symptomless — which is exactly why testing, not how you feel, is how it's found. Here's what rare visible signs can look like.

High cholesterol is almost always completely symptomless. This is one of the most important things to understand about it — you cannot tell whether your cholesterol is high by how you feel.

Why There Are (Almost) No Symptoms

Cholesterol builds up inside artery walls gradually and silently over years, without triggering pain or noticeable sensation, until it eventually contributes to a cardiovascular event like a heart attack or stroke — at which point it's a complication, not an early symptom.

Rare Visible Signs

In cases of very high, often genetically-driven cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia), some visible signs can occasionally appear: yellowish deposits around the eyelids (xanthelasma), a grayish-white ring around the cornea (arcus senilis, especially notable in younger people), or small fatty deposits under the skin near joints (xanthomas). These are uncommon and specific to significantly elevated, longstanding cholesterol.

Does High Cholesterol Cause Dizziness?

High cholesterol itself doesn't directly cause dizziness. Dizziness can occur if cholesterol has contributed to significant blockage affecting blood flow to the brain, but this would be a sign of advanced disease, not an early warning sign — dizziness has many far more common causes unrelated to cholesterol.

The Only Reliable Way to Know

Since there's essentially no symptom to watch for, a lipid panel blood test — not attention to how you feel — is the only reliable way to know your cholesterol levels.

Avertissement

This guide is for general education only and does not diagnose or recommend treatment for any individual. Cholesterol is checked with a blood test regardless of how you feel — talk to a doctor about when you should be screened.

Questions fréquentes

Can you feel high cholesterol?

No — high cholesterol is almost always completely symptomless. A blood test is the only reliable way to know your levels.

Can high cholesterol cause dizziness?

Not directly — dizziness would only relate to cholesterol if it has caused significant blockage affecting blood flow, which is a sign of advanced disease, not an early symptom. Dizziness has many other, more common causes.
