Normal Blood Sugar After Eating

Révisé par l'équipe éditoriale médicale de JordanMedHub · 12/09/2026

En bref

Blood sugar naturally rises after eating — here's how high it typically goes, how long it takes to come back down, and when a post-meal reading is a concern.

Blood sugar rises after every meal as the body digests carbohydrates into glucose — this is normal and expected, not a sign of a problem on its own.

What's Normal After Eating

For someone without diabetes, blood sugar typically peaks around one hour after starting a meal and returns below 140 mg/dL by two hours. The exact peak varies with the size and composition of the meal — larger portions and more refined carbohydrates tend to raise it higher and faster.

Readings That Suggest Prediabetes or Diabetes

A two-hour post-meal reading of 140–199 mg/dL falls in the prediabetes range, and 200 mg/dL or higher meets the diagnostic threshold for diabetes (usually confirmed with additional testing). This two-hour measurement is also how an oral glucose tolerance test is interpreted, though that test uses a standardized glucose drink rather than a regular meal.

If You Already Have Diabetes

Post-meal targets are usually less strict than the "normal" range above and are set individually by a doctor — commonly below 180 mg/dL one to two hours after starting a meal. Our normal blood sugar levels guide covers how fasting, post-meal, and diabetes-specific targets relate to each other.

This guide is for general education only and does not diagnose or recommend treatment for any individual. If your post-meal blood sugar is consistently elevated, talk to a doctor about testing.

Questions fréquentes

How long after eating does blood sugar peak?

Typically around one hour after starting a meal for someone without diabetes, returning below 140 mg/dL by two hours.

Is it normal for blood sugar to spike after a carb-heavy meal?

Some rise is normal and expected. How high and how fast depends on the amount and type of carbohydrate, and on individual factors — a doctor can help interpret whether a specific pattern is a concern.
