Normal Blood Sugar Levels

Révisé par l'équipe éditoriale médicale de JordanMedHub · 12/09/2026

En bref

Normal blood sugar depends on when you last ate — here's what's typical fasting, after meals, and at random times, and how those ranges differ for people with diabetes.

"Normal" blood sugar isn't a single number — it depends on when the test is taken relative to your last meal, and whether you already have diabetes.

Normal Ranges for People Without Diabetes

  • Fasting (no food for at least 8 hours): below 100 mg/dL
  • 2 hours after eating: below 140 mg/dL
  • Random, any time of day: generally below 140 mg/dL, though this varies more than fasting or post-meal readings

Ranges That Suggest Prediabetes or Diabetes

  • Prediabetes: fasting 100–125 mg/dL, or 140–199 mg/dL two hours after eating
  • Diabetes: fasting 126 mg/dL or higher (confirmed on a repeat test), or 200 mg/dL or higher two hours after eating, or 200 mg/dL or higher at any time along with classic symptoms

Our prediabetes guide and Type 2 diabetes guide cover what happens once a result falls in either of these ranges.

Target Ranges If You Already Have Diabetes

For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the goal usually isn't the same as the "normal" range above — it's an individualized target set by a doctor, commonly around 80–130 mg/dL before meals and below 180 mg/dL one to two hours after starting a meal, adjusted for age, other health conditions, and risk of low blood sugar.

Pratique médicale établie

These ranges are the standard diagnostic thresholds used by the American Diabetes Association. A single reading outside the normal range isn't a diagnosis on its own — context, symptoms, and repeat testing all matter, which is why this is best interpreted with a doctor rather than compared against a chart alone.

Avertissement

This guide is for general education only and does not diagnose or recommend treatment for any individual. If your blood sugar readings are consistently outside the normal range, talk to a doctor about what that means for you specifically.

Questions fréquentes

What is a normal blood sugar level for someone without diabetes?

Generally below 100 mg/dL fasting, and below 140 mg/dL two hours after eating.

Does normal blood sugar change with age?

The diagnostic thresholds themselves don't change with age, but target ranges for older adults who already have diabetes are sometimes set less strictly by a doctor to reduce the risk of low blood sugar.
