Treatment for Insulin Resistance

En bref
Insulin resistance often responds well to lifestyle changes — here's what actually helps, and when medication becomes part of the picture.
Dans cet article
Insulin resistance is one of the more responsive stages in this disease process — meaningful improvement is often possible through lifestyle changes alone.
What Actually Helps
- Physical activity — regular exercise helps muscles use glucose more effectively, improving insulin sensitivity relatively quickly
- Weight management — even a modest reduction in body weight, particularly around the abdomen, can meaningfully improve insulin sensitivity
- Dietary changes — reducing refined carbohydrates and added sugar, and favoring fiber-rich whole foods
- Adequate sleep — poor sleep is independently linked to worsened insulin sensitivity
When Medication Is Added
If lifestyle changes alone aren't enough, or if other risk factors are present, a doctor may prescribe a medication such as metformin. This is a decision made individually with a doctor, not something to self-start, and doesn't replace the lifestyle changes above.
A doctor typically tracks whether these changes are working through follow-up testing — such as repeat fasting insulin or HbA1c levels — rather than by symptoms alone, since insulin resistance itself usually doesn't cause noticeable symptoms.

Questions fréquentes
Can insulin resistance be reversed with exercise alone?
For many people, regular physical activity meaningfully improves insulin sensitivity, though results vary and other factors like diet and weight also play a role.
