Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

Révisé par l'équipe éditoriale médicale de JordanMedHub · 12/09/2026

En bref

Insulin resistance often has no obvious symptoms, but a few visible signs and risk factors can point to it.

Insulin resistance itself typically causes no direct symptoms — most people find out through blood tests or by developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.

Possible Visible Signs

  • Acanthosis nigricans — dark, velvety patches of skin, often on the neck, underarms, or groin
  • Skin tags — small skin growths, particularly around the neck
  • Increased hunger or fatigue — some people notice these, though they're nonspecific

Risk Factors Worth Knowing

Excess weight (especially around the abdomen), a sedentary lifestyle, a family history of type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and certain ethnic backgrounds are all associated with a higher likelihood of insulin resistance — these risk factors often matter more than waiting for symptoms to appear.
