Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

En bref
High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms at all — which is exactly why it's called a silent condition. Here's what to know, and the rare warning signs of a hypertensive emergency.
Dans cet article
High blood pressure is often called a "silent" condition precisely because it typically causes no symptoms, even when readings are significantly elevated — which is why regular measurement, not symptoms, is how it's actually detected.
Why It's Usually Silent
The body can adapt to gradually rising blood pressure over months or years without triggering noticeable symptoms, even as the pressure quietly damages blood vessels, the heart, and other organs in the background.
When Symptoms Do Occur
Very high blood pressure can occasionally cause headache, shortness of breath, or nosebleeds, though these symptoms are nonspecific and often absent even at high readings — they shouldn't be relied on to indicate whether blood pressure is elevated.
Hypertensive Crisis: A Medical Emergency
A sudden, severe spike in blood pressure — a hypertensive crisis — is different from ordinary silent hypertension and can cause severe headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, vision changes, confusion, or difficulty speaking. It's most likely when blood pressure is poorly controlled or untreated, and can also be triggered by missed blood pressure medication doses or suddenly stopping a blood pressure medication. Our guide to this emergency covers the warning signs and what to do in more depth. Can you feel high blood pressure?
Usually not — most people with high blood pressure feel completely normal, which is why regular measurement rather than symptoms is how it's detected.
