Warning Signs of Advanced Liver Disease
If fatty liver disease progresses to significant scarring (cirrhosis), more serious symptoms can develop: yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), swelling in the legs or abdomen, easy bruising or bleeding, and confusion.
Why Regular Check-Ups Matter
Because early fatty liver disease is silent, blood tests that check liver function, and sometimes imaging, are how it's usually found in people with risk factors — not by waiting for symptoms. If you have known risk factors such as obesity or type 2 diabetes and notice persistent unexplained fatigue or discomfort in the upper right abdomen, it's worth proactively asking your doctor about liver function testing rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.
