Colitis

Inflammation of the inner lining of the colon, which can be caused by infection, reduced blood flow, or — in ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease — an overactive immune response. It's distinct from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): colitis involves visible inflammation and tissue damage, while IBS is a functional disorder without structural damage. Treatment depends heavily on the specific cause and can include medication to control inflammation or address the underlying trigger.
