Stress and Psychological Stress

En bref

Some stress is a normal, even useful, part of life — but chronic, unmanaged stress takes a real toll on both mental and physical health.

Stress is the body's natural response to a demand or challenge, triggering a cascade of hormones (including cortisol and adrenaline) that prepare the body to react.

Acute vs. Chronic Stress

Short-term, acute stress — like before a job interview — can actually improve focus and performance, and resolves once the situation passes. Chronic stress, from ongoing pressures like work, financial strain, or relationship difficulties, keeps the body in a prolonged state of alert that takes a real physical and mental toll over time.

Effects on the Body and Mind

Chronic stress is linked to headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, digestive problems, sleep disturbances (see our insomnia guide), weakened immune function, and an increased risk of developing or worsening anxiety or depression over time. New or severe physical symptoms — such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations — should still be medically evaluated rather than automatically attributed to stress.

Common Sources

Work pressure, financial concerns, relationship difficulties, major life changes (even positive ones, like a wedding), and health concerns are among the most common sources of chronic stress.

Management Strategies

Regular physical activity, adequate sleep, structured relaxation techniques (like deep breathing or mindfulness), maintaining social connections, and setting realistic boundaries around demands all help manage stress effectively. When stress feels overwhelming or unmanageable despite these efforts, a mental health professional can provide additional, more structured support.
