Diabetes Complications: An Overview

En bref

Long-term high blood sugar can affect multiple organs over time — here's an overview of the main complications, and why control matters.

Consistently high blood sugar over years can gradually damage blood vessels and nerves throughout the body — but regular monitoring, treatment, and blood sugar control substantially reduce these risks, and many complications are preventable or manageable when caught early.

Cardiovascular Disease

Diabetes roughly doubles the risk of heart disease and stroke, since high blood sugar contributes to damage in blood vessel walls over time. Managing blood pressure and cholesterol alongside blood sugar is part of reducing this risk.

Kidney Disease (Nephropathy)

Diabetes is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide, which is why regular kidney function testing is a standard part of diabetes care.

Eye Disease (Retinopathy)

High blood sugar can damage blood vessels in the retina, and diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in working-age adults — regular eye exams are recommended for early detection, often before symptoms appear.

Nerve Damage (Neuropathy)

Nerve damage, most commonly affecting the feet and hands, can cause numbness, tingling, or pain, and reduces sensation in ways that raise the risk of unnoticed injuries and infections.

Foot Complications (Diabetic Foot Disease)

Nerve damage and reduced blood flow to the feet can lead to diabetic foot disease — slow-healing sores or ulcers that, if untreated, raise the risk of serious infection and, in severe cases, lower-limb amputation. Daily foot checks, proper footwear, and prompt attention to any cuts or sores are key parts of prevention.

Why Monitoring Matters

Many of these complications develop silently over years before causing symptoms, which is why routine screening — blood pressure checks, kidney function tests, eye exams, and foot exams — is recommended for people with diabetes even when they feel well.
