Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Reversed?
Révisé par l'équipe éditoriale médicale de JordanMedHub · 12/09/2026
En bref
Some people with type 2 diabetes achieve remission through significant lifestyle changes — but it's not guaranteed for everyone, and the terminology matters.
Dans cet article
For some people with type 2 diabetes, yes — significant lifestyle changes can bring blood sugar back into the normal range without medication, a state doctors call remission rather than a cure.
Remission, Not a Cure
The distinction matters: remission means blood sugar has returned to a non-diabetic range, typically defined as an HbA1c below 6.5% for at least three months without diabetes medication. It doesn't mean the underlying tendency toward insulin resistance is gone permanently — blood sugar can rise again if the lifestyle changes that produced remission aren't maintained.
What the Evidence Shows
Studies on structured, significant weight loss — particularly through very low-calorie diets under medical supervision, or after bariatric surgery — have shown remission is achievable for some people, especially those earlier in the disease course with less long-term insulin resistance. Remission is less likely, though not impossible, for people who've had type 2 diabetes for many years or who already need insulin.
Why This Isn't Guaranteed for Everyone
How much benefit is possible depends on individual factors — how long you've had diabetes, how much insulin-producing capacity remains, weight, and other health conditions. This is a conversation to have with a doctor rather than a guaranteed outcome to expect from any single approach, and it's not something to pursue by stopping medication on your own.

Questions fréquentes
What is diabetes remission?
Remission means blood sugar has returned to a non-diabetic range (typically HbA1c below 6.5%) for at least three months without diabetes medication — it's not the same as being permanently cured.
Can bariatric surgery reverse type 2 diabetes?
For some people, yes — significant weight loss after bariatric surgery has been shown to produce remission in many cases, though results vary by individual and how long diabetes has been present.
