Symptoms of Anxiety

En bref
Anxiety shows up in the mind and the body at once — here's the full range of symptoms, and when they point to something worth discussing with a doctor.
Dans cet article
Anxiety symptoms span both the mind and the body, which is part of why anxiety is sometimes mistaken for a physical illness before being correctly identified.
Psychological Symptoms
Excessive worry that's hard to control, restlessness or feeling on edge, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and anticipating the worst in situations that don't clearly warrant it.
Physical Symptoms
A racing or pounding heart, muscle tension, fatigue, sweating, trembling, stomach discomfort, and sleep problems (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep) are all common — and can be intense enough that people seek medical evaluation for the physical symptoms before recognizing anxiety as the cause. New or worsening physical symptoms — especially chest pain, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations — should still be evaluated by a doctor rather than automatically assumed to be anxiety, particularly the first time they occur.
How Severity Varies
Symptoms range from mild, occasional unease to severe, near-constant distress that significantly limits daily activities — the specific pattern and how much it interferes with life, rather than any single symptom, is what determines whether professional support is worth seeking.
When to Seek Support
Consider talking to a doctor or mental health professional if worry feels excessive or hard to control, has lasted six months or more, or is interfering with work, relationships, or daily activities.

Questions fréquentes
Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?
Yes — a racing heart, muscle tension, sweating, and stomach discomfort are all common physical manifestations of anxiety, sometimes intense enough to be mistaken for a separate physical illness.
